Authors, Books, and Beyond: A Conversation with Jasmine Warga About Where Her Ideas Come from, How She Became a Writer, and Her Hope that Readers Will Use Her Stories as Inspiration for Their Own By Amina Chaudhri
Document: Column
Introductory Paragraph: Jasmine Warga’s novel in verse, Other Words for Home, won a Newbery Honor in 2020, with its poignant themes of identity and kinship. That theme is revisited in very different ways in her latest middle grade novel, A Strange Thing Happened in Cherry Hall. The protagonists, Rami and Veda, take it on themselves to locate a painting that went missing from a museum, and in doing so, learn about each other, the people around them, and the importance of being observant. In our conversation, Jasmine talked about how being an author is the fulfilment of a childhood dream, about the work that goes into writing a book, and how much she learns in doing research on new topics.
