The “Bates” Shop: Fishing for Primary Source Documents: Bias and Decision Making By David Bates

Introductory Paragraph: As we enter one of the most contentious election seasons in American history, it is crucial for students to recognize how opinion can be shaped by media. Most Americans, including young people, are aware of the concept of media bias. But are we truly able to spot it reliably? In this article, I will share some sources from an infamous event in Chicago’s history—the Haymarket Affair of 1886—and discuss ways that students can explore their biases.
