Finding Common Ground: Understanding Ourselves and the World Through Literature: Finding Resilience and Self-Confidence
By Jung Kim and Deborah Augsburger

Document: Column

Introductory Paragraph:  There are a lot of hardships and dangers in the fictional and real world, ranging from first learning how to ride a bike to navigating racism and the end of the world. This collection of books shows the strength and resilience of the (mostly) human spirit. Whether it is finding joy in an oppressive world or learning self-acceptance, the protagonists in these stories must learn to trust and love themselves and others. The 2023-2024 school year was hard for many—some may say the hardest in some ways since the beginning of COVID-19—so it seems fitting to center hope, joy, and resilience as we bridge the end of one school year and start another school year.
